Repurpose Dance Costumes into Halloween Costumes!

Halloween is just around the corner – and we know families are trying to make, find, or buy creative and fun Halloween costumes for their kids.  If you have a dancer in your family, the materials for a great costume may be tucked away in a closet!  We have some ideas to help you build fun Halloween costumes from previous years’ dance costumes here.

Character Costumes
If you have a character-based costume from a previous year, your costume may already be complete!  Some common character-themed dance costumes include: animals (especially for young dancers!), princesses, superheros, country boys/girls, sailors, and music icons (our Jazz 1 class had an awesome Prince-inspired costume last year)!

Decade Costumes
We LOVE to create dances that bring back the music and style of a bygone era – and those costumes are easy to repurpose for Halloween!  1920’s flappers, 1950’s sock-hop girls, 1970’s disco divas – your costume may be all that you need to rock a historic Halloween look!

Add Accessories to Costumes for a One-of-a-Kind Look
A beautiful ballet costume can become a fairy or fairy godmother with a pair of wings and a wand!  A lyrical dress can be transformed into a princess gown with a tiara and long white gloves.  That gold and silver sparkly jazz costume can be a New York City Rockette uniform – just add a hairpiece and be ready to show your eye-high kick!

Give Ripped or Torn Pieces a New Life
Did your dancer spill on their beautiful white ballet costume?  They can be a zombie bride!  Ripped tights or tutus can become a zombie from Thriller!  Dancers from The Pointe will be repurposing old costumes, tutus, and tops to be Zombie Ballerinas in Cedar Rapids’ first Halloween Parade later this month – we hope to see you there!
