Why We Build Breaks Into Our Dance Season

When you look at our studio calendar, you’ll notice a few inter-sessional breaks throughout the year. These are planned pauses in our regular weekly classes, and each one has a purpose!

We know families work hard to fit dance into busy schedules. We plan these breaks as part of our full season’s class calendar, with care for the learning, preparation, and rest that help make dance at The Pointe a positive experience for everyone.

Our Teachers, Assistants, and Staff Continue Learning

We want our teachers to feel supported and prepared throughout the season. Intersessional breaks give our team time to meet, participate in training, share ideas, and work through classroom challenges together.

Once classes are underway, teachers have a clearer picture of what their students need. Time to connect during the season helps us respond to those needs and bring fresh ideas and energy back to class.

Breaks Make Room for Special Experiences

Some of the most memorable parts of dance happen beyond our regular weekly classes! Special events, including Nutcracker rehearsals, bring dancers and teachers together to prepare for experiences that take extra coordination.

Planned breaks help create space for that work within an already busy studio calendar.

We Keep Class Meetings Balanced

Holidays and school breaks don’t affect every day of the week equally. Without adjustments, weekend classes would meet fewer times over the school year than many midweek classes.

We look at the entire season when planning our calendar. Intersessional breaks help balance the number of class meetings across weekdays so dancers receive consistent opportunities to learn and practice, whichever day they attend.

Giving Families Time to Breathe

We love seeing our dancers each week, and we also know that kids and families need downtime.

During busy seasons, a planned pause can offer a chance to catch up, enjoy a quieter evening, or simply rest. That breathing room helps students and teachers return with renewed energy and excitement. Rest is a valuable part of learning, too!

Leaving Room for the Unexpected

Iowa weather sometimes has its own plans! Intersessional breaks give us potential opportunities to schedule makeup classes if extensive weather cancellations or other unexpected disruptions make them necessary. This was very helpful when we had a pipe burst in January 2023!

That flexibility allows us to respond thoughtfully when the season doesn’t go exactly as planned.

Our goal is a season filled with learning, growth, connection, and joy. These breaks help us support all of that, while continuing to make dance great for kids and easy for parents!
